Clara and I like listening to birds when we bike. It’s a fun way to experience country roads. She’s gotten good at recognizing cat birds, blue jays and chickadees by their calls. She caws like a crow and honks like a goose with gusto. We recently discovered the haunting call of loons while lakeside camping. Clara’s loon howl is better than anything I’ve heard.
We aren’t alone in our bicycle bird listening it seems. Birdsong expert David Kroodsma journeyed across 10 states by bicycle with his son to hear American birds sing. His book, Listening to a Continent Sing, is a beautiful story of bicycles and birds.
